First you think it, then you act it, then you become it. That’s an age old adage for change. The concept is that first you have to think about what you want. What do you want to accomplish in life? How do you want to be remembered? The second step is to practice doing that thing that you want. Fake it till you make it. Not lying, so to speak, but imagining what a person who is already that thing would do and doing it! Then the more you practice, the easier and easier that thing will be. You will eventually become that thought that originally crossed your mind.

I’m a weight management expert so how does this fit into living healthy? The first ingredient to living a healthy lifestyle is to love you! That sounds easy but a large number of chronic dieters do not love themselves. So to create a healthy lifestyle the first step is think that you love yourself. The next step is to act like you love yourself. Here are some tips:

  • Repeat in your head several times a day especially during meal time “I love myself”.
  • View food and exercise as a way of showing yourself love: a gift to your body.
  • View unhealthy foods not as treats but as unloving acts.
  • Keep healthy food available for meals and snacks.
  • Plan exercise as a part of your normal routine. Set an appointment and keep it just as you would a doctor appointment.
  • When repeating the mantra “I love myself” notice the little voice in your head that says “I would love myself if _______”.  That little voice is telling you what you need to address.
